When Ballarat was first founded, it was known as "Ballaarat". That name derives from two aboriginal words "balla - resting" and "arat - place" ; there are a number of towns in Victoria with the suffix "arat" in the name, Ararat is another example. When the city changed the spelling, most incorporated bodies, companies etc which had "Ballaarat" as part of their name also changed their name to reflect the new spelling. However, some did not, especially those with historical links to the past. One such entity is the "Ballaarat Astronomical Society", which has its home in Ballarat. Still confused? Spare a thought for the poor proof-reader who ran out of red pen trying to correct our spelling "mistakes"!
