The Richards or Owl Window, symbolising night and day was donated in 1929 by Mrs E. Richards, widow of George Richards, and is one of only two commemorative windows. This was the last original stained glass window to be installed at the Observatory. The window was made by Stansfield and Smith, a Ballarat firm with a branch in Melbourne.
George Richards, a civil, mining and consulting engineer was a friend and benefactor of the Observatory, and the designer of the Jelbart Dome. He arrived in Ballarat from Cornwall in 1855, aged 12, and died in 1921.
